Muir Woods No. I
 
Muir Woods National Monument outside of San Francisco is home to old growth Redwood trees.  Most of the trees in the park are between 500 and 800 years old, with the oldest believed to be nearly 1,200 years old.

Muir Woods No. II
 
Muir Woods is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The park is designed for pedestrian use and has approximately 1.5 miles of paved and wheelchair accessible paths. Camping and picnicking are not permitted in Muir Woods, but are permitted in the adjacent Mount Tamalpais State Park.

Muir Woods No. III
 
Muir Woods is known for it Redwood trees. Redwoods are a relative of Giant Sequoia trees and are notable for their height. Redwood trees have grown as high as 380 feet, although the tallest tree in Muir Woods is 258 feet. The seed for a Redwood tree is about the size of a tomato.

Muir Woods is one of the last remaining locations where Redwood trees can be found. Scientists believe that one hundred and fifty million years ago, all of North America was covered with Redwood trees. By the 20th century, most of these forests had been cut down and the majority of remaining Redwoods are located in the stretch of land along the Pacific Coastline between Monterey, California and Oregon.

Muir Woods is one the the few remaining locations where old-growth Redwood trees can be found. The location of Muir Woods along the Pacific Ocean is ideal for supporting the growth of these magnificent trees. The coastal fog created by the Pacific Ocean creates a moist environment that is vital to the trees' growth. The average annual rainfall in Muir Woods varies between 39.4 inches and 47.2 inches.

Muir Woods National Monument is part of the United States National Park Service and is located approximately 12 miles North of San Francisco, California. Muir Woods is approximately 554 acres in total, but only 240 acres are covered with old-growth Redwood trees.
